Red Kite
Red Kite Model Overview
Model Type: Radio control slope soarer
Wingspan: 64-3/4 in
The Red Kite is a glider inspired by the majestic bird known for its impressive flight abilities. This model mirrors the Red Kite's graceful silhouette and masterful aerodynamics.
A few years ago, this magnificent bird was reintroduced to England, becoming a common sight in the region. Close to an airfield, several have established their territories, showcasing a unique ability to exploit weak thermals by turning sharply with their forked tails. This blend of beauty and engineering serves as the foundation for the model's design.
Finding the right proportions posed initial challenges. Various ornithology textbooks provided limited information, often only referencing wingspan and average length. A small plan view, however, eventually helped establish the correct dimensions for the model.
Another intricate aspect was determining plumage and coloration. While many illustrations depicted the ventral side, there were scarce references for the dorsal side. As a result, some creative imagination and personal observations were incorporated into the model's final appearance.
The plan view revealed that the original bird's proportions might not be ideal for model aerodynamics, leading to a design choice that favored a V-shaped tail for stability instead of a traditional fin. This design reflects the natural dynamics of the Red Kite, allowing for improved maneuverability.
The wing profile selected for this model is the Selig S5020-084-86, known for its self-stability and minimal moment due to its reflex design. To enhance control, particularly with a V-tail setup, the rudder has been coupled with the ailerons, necessitating the use of computerized radio controls.
Determining the center of gravity required careful consideration, with a starting point set at the classic 28-30% measurement. The model incorporates significant rudder movement alongside slight elevator adjustments, with differential aileron motion ensuring responsiveness. This design allows for versatility in flying on slopes and flat terrains, accommodating various launching methods.
Overall, this model captures the elegance and skill of the Red Kite, transforming inspiration from nature into an innovative aerodynamic achievement.
