Consolidated Vultee XP-81
Consolidated Vultee XP-81
Introducing the Consolidated Vultee XP-81! This delightful scale model features a wingspan of 27 inches and is designed for rubber power.
About the XP-81
The 27” span twin turboprop/jet model can be skillfully built following the FAC rules, offering you the flexibility to choose between a pusher or tractor configuration. The XP-81 is fascinating; it boasts a propeller in the front and an auxiliary jet engine in the rear, enhancing its performance during combat. With the propeller allowing for long-distance travel and the jet assisting in combat effectiveness, this design truly stands out.
I have a deep admiration for these aircraft and the various innovative proposals that emerged at the end of the war and in the years that followed. The advancements in aerodynamics and propulsion during that time were incredible!
Construction Details
Wing: I used Rees’ sliced rib construction method for the wing, ensuring both strength and lightweight performance.
Fuselage: The fuselage was built on a ladder jig, carefully alternating the stringers from side to side to keep the tension balanced.
Empennage: For the horizontal stabilizer, I utilized 3/32” square and sheet balsa, constructing it flat on the building board. The vertical fin and rudder use one of my favorite techniques: I outline the structure flat on the board, then finish it in the air after attaching the vertical spar. I added 1/32”x1/8” ribs over the spar to complete the leading and trailing edges.
