1/2A P-51D Mustang
The 1/2A P-51D Mustang is a radio control sport scale model.
Quote: "The sport scale Mustang, available in either World War II fighter or racing configuration, is the most realistic Half-A ship published to date. In terms of performance, it is virtually unsurpassed."
The era of 1/2A RC is undeniably here. Half-A racing has demonstrated the potential of small engines, providing modelers with the experience necessary for achieving reliable performance. This evolution allows for a shift from racing-focused models to high-performance sport planes that boast a more realistic appearance.
Given its streamlined design and ideal proportions for modeling, the P-51 was an obvious choice for a Stand-Off Scale model. The designer prioritized an authentic appearance, even after accommodating available accessories. The plans presented represent the third redesign, with each iteration incorporating subtle adjustments to enhance the model's aesthetic. To date, five P-51 models have been constructed and are actively flying, all exhibiting outstanding performance.
Initial apprehension accompanied the first flight of the detailed military version, but it flew effortlessly from the designer's hand, requiring only a minor adjustment in aileron trim for leveling. Regarding performance, the P-51, similar to the 1/2A racers, necessitates a reliable engine; otherwise, performance may disappoint. However, it does not require a “super engine” — a customized or highly modified powerplant. All testing has been conducted with new Cox TD .049 engines, Cox Racing Fuel, and standard 6/3 gray Cox props. Operating without pressure, these engines consistently reach 18,000 rpm or higher. If the engine is old or fatigued, a rebuild or replacement is advisable.
Reviving many older engines can be achieved by removing varnish from the cylinder using 000 steel wool, a task recommended after every third or fourth flying session to maintain peak performance.
The most enjoyable aspect of this endeavor has been the authentic appearance and impressive flight capabilities of the small P-51 models. A single pint of fuel suffices for an afternoon of flying, and these airplanes can be flown in nearly any location.
Construction Details
The construction of the wing follows traditional techniques and is built flat on the plan. The airfoil transitions from root to tip, increasing in percentage thickness while simultaneously shifting the high point of the airfoil forward towards the tips.
